Using the REMI PI+ model an economic impact assessment was conducted that estimated the economic benefit to Lake County, Indiana of the introduction of commercial passenger service at the airport. The study preceded a letter of intent (LOI) that, along with other sources, funded the rehabilitation of the existing passenger terminal and extension of the airport's runway. Today the airport is recognized as the Chicago Metropolitan Combined Statistical Area's third airport, playing an essential role in supporting regional demand for general aviation and corporate international travel demand.

Once one of the two largest steel production and fabrication regions in the US , Northwest Indiana remains an important hub of domestic steel production, fabrication and distribution.

Economic/demographic base surveys are performed as a basis for airport activity forecasts. A templet developed by Ricondo & Associates was used to perform economic demographic surveys that supported the issuance of revenue bond debt financing for terminal and runway projects at the New Orleans and the Chicago airports. The surveys described the industrial base and demography of each regional economy. Population, income and social-economic mobility are causal factors in forecasting air travel and airport service demand and requirements for airport facilities.

Using the REMI PI+ model a study was prepared to estimate the economic impact of construction related to the O'Hare Terminal Area Plan (TAP) to a 9 county region of Northeast Illinois and Northwest Indiana. An assessment of the broader economic contributions of increasing activity levels at O'Hare and Midway Airports to the regional economy were also estimated. The assessment was performed on a airport operational program basis, estimating economic impacts separately related to terminal, airfield, terminal support and cargo operations as well as those related to airport construction expenditures and visitors to the region through the airports.

The "Cargo City" was to be constructed in a newly formed special economic development district and free trade zone near Xi'an in Shaanxi Province. Effective regional economic investment planning requires assessment of both the benefits as well as the costs of competing investment strategies- including opportunity costs. The tradeoff between real estate development density and airport market access was encapsulated in this project. Direct, indirect and induced economic impacts of alternate real estate development and airspace protection zones configurations were measured. Agglomerative effects on regional economic geography were also considered but not estimated.
